Day 1: First Preview

August 6, 2011 | By Ingrid | Filed in: Edinburgh.

This is our company’s first year at the Edinburgh fringe, so we didn’t know what to expect in terms of audience numbers. We kept prices low for our previews, gave out vouchers for free tickets and put up some free seats on Theatre Ninjas. Some of our actors have performed at the Fringe before and we kept hearing rumours that the average Fringe audience size is a pick-your-favourite-one-digit-number. Our hope was that we’d get at least a few people through the door so that we could show them what we have to offer.

We were completely unprepared for the reception we got. We had a queue of people lining up outside the doors of Paradise in Augustine’s and a grand total of 97 people in the audience, not including the director. Ninety-seven! That’s a TWO digit number, and both of those digits are respectably large! What’s more, some of those ninety-seven people even paid for their tickets!

So, let me just take this opportunity to say thank you, Edinburgh, for one incredible, magical performance. This may very well be our largest, most receptive audience in the whole run. It was such fun and such an incredible buzz. Even if we play to single-digit audiences for the rest of the run, we’ll take the energy we got from today’s performance on stage with us each and every day.
