Strangely, this is what Chambers has to say about yomp:
yomp (esp milit sl) vi to carry heavy equipment on foot over difficult terrain; (loosely, often facetious) to walk or trek in a determined, dogged or laboured manner, esp heavily laden. [Poss imit] n such a walk or trek.
